How to Pack China and Glassware

You need to take extra care when packing and transporting china and glassware. Follow the steps below to properly pack fragile items and keep them safe during your move.

Supplies you will need:

  • Packing tape, small and medium-sized boxes
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing paper. (Avoid using newspaper as this will smudge your china and glassware and will not provide the proper protection.)
  • Cardboard pieces
  • Styrofoam packing peanuts

Packing your china plates and bowls:

  • Use dish barrel cartons to pack your china.
  • Layer the bottom of the carton with a bed of crumpled packing paper or packing peanuts to create a cushion.
  • Wrap the plates individually. Bundle them in threes (or at the most in fours) with a layer of bubble wrap between each plate. Stand them sideways in the box. Do not lay them flat. Repeat, leaving room for fillers.
  • Fill all the gaps and layer the top with additional packing peanuts and crumpled paper.
  • Pack the cartons with the larger items at the bottom and smaller ones on top.
  • Seal securely and clearly write “Fragile Chinaā€¯ on each carton to ensure that they are handled with caution.

Packing glassware:

  • Use bubble wrap to wrap each piece of glassware, then tape securely.
  • Fill the bottom of the box with a layer of crumpled packing paper or peanuts to create a cushion.
  • Place the wrapped glassware in an upright position in the box.
  • Add a layer of cardboard and an additional layer of cushioning on the top and sides. Fill in any gaps with additional peanuts or paper.
  • Seal the box securely and clearly write “Fragile Glassware” on them to ensure that they are handled with caution.
